Гомер Плесси был на 7/8 белым, на 1/8 черным. На этом основании его отправили в отдельный вагон для черных. Тот счел это попранием своих прав гражданина США и дошел до Верховного суда – который и постановил, что даже 1/8 «черной крови» служит достаточным основанием для отправки в вагон для граждан второго сорта. Для сравнения: даже в гитлеровской Германии никто не относился к немцу на 7/8 и еврею на 1/8 как к чистокровному еврею.
